As I sit outside of one of Bermuda’s popular Pubs “Swizzle Inn” and sip
the very potent rum concoction named after the pub I realize that the
band or husband and wife duo 1undread don’t quite fit their
surroundings. It does not take long to figure out the popular form of
music in Bermuda are Reggae Dance Hall, R&B,
and Hip Hop but 1undread are an Electronic hybrid of styles. Brian
Swan the music programmer who also works as a music teacher at a local
High School explains,
“ We incorporate all of these styles into our music but my wife (Nic
Swan the vocalist of the duo) is from Leeds. That’s where we met. We
are both influenced by Drum n Bass Acid Jazz,
Trip Hop and IDM as well as the music that you hear in the local scene
so as a result you end up with this bass heavy mind twisting sound.”
An interesting thing about 1undread’s music is that even though the
music is “bass heavy mind twisting” similar to Square Pusher or Tim
Exile the vocals in contrast, are bluesy,
and Jazzy with a limited amount of effects. The vocals seem to make
the music which on its own has limited commercial appeal accessible
to a wider audience. Nic, who has also worked as a DJ and belly dancer
explains “Vocals play an important part in popular music the voice is
what people hang on to for many reasons the humanness.”
Still curious as to how these two artists could combine so many
different styles of music I ask them about their song writing process.
“ Brian is an easy person for me to work with.” Says Nic “He writes
music very quickly then I come along and improvise the vocal parts.
Most of the recordings are the first or second takes”
Brian replies “I like to the raw emotion of the performance. I think
that a lot of music is over produced and looses the soul and the
feeling that music should have. When I write music it flows from me. A
lot of the edits are done as I record so there is a hands on soulful
feel to the music even though it’s electronic.”
